Registration for Cosmic Graveyards and Noble Lies: Materialism, Science Fiction, and the Human Longing for Transcendence
The philosophy of scientific materialism is typically touted as the only intellectually viable position in this technological age. Adherents often seriously downplay, or merely fail to realize, the tremendous existential cost of this view. In this 90-minute tutorial, we will examine the fatal flaws of scientific materialism and discuss how excellent science fiction literature can be utilized in the project of imaginative apologetics.
Please read the following beforehand, which we’ll discuss after the presentation. My essay, “Scientific Materialist Manifesto: The Pursuit of Meaning in a Godless Universe;” Isaac Asimov's short story, “The Last Question;” and Ted Chiang’s short story “Exhalation.” The Time Machine by H.G. Wells is optional and will be briefly discussed in the lecture.
