The Argument from Beauty to God: A Video Presentation and Discussion with Dr. Paul M. Gould
In this session, we'll explore at least two things. First, we'll consider the nature and value of beauty. Is beauty one of the “great facts of the world” or merely in the eye of the beholder? I'll argue that beauty is an objective feature of the world and that experiences of beauty are inexhaustibly pleasurable and serve as a kind of invitation to see the world in a new and fresh perspective.
Second, I'll consider what beauty reveals about ultimate reality. To help us see clearly, I'll consider two pieces of evidence—the facts that the world is saturated with beauty (we find beauty everywhere we turn our mind’s eye) and that beauty possesses a kind of transcendent quality (i.e., the fact that it evokes the eternal).
With these features of beauty in place, we'll consider how beauty helps us discern the true story of the world. I'll argue that there is a good argument from beauty to God. If we have time, we'll explore the connection between art, beauty, and understanding. And we'll talk about Banksy. It will be a beautiful time!
