The idea of 'persuasion' in the ancient wold of the apostles was 'to convince, to urge, to have confidence.' Developing trust with another person was an important part of that process. The use of 'persuasive speech' meant presenting a 'plausible argument.' As a journalist I know the importance of 'facts,' but realize I now report in a world of 'feelings over facts,' so persuading people means more now than just presenting facts and letting the audience decide what to do with those facts. In personal relationships we must present plausible arguments in a spirit of humility and love. As Paul wrote the Ephesians, "the truth is in Jesus," and, "speaking the truth in love." Gavin is correct that we must love those to whom we present the truth of the Gospel of Christ. Jesus is the Truth and that will not change. What has changed through the centuries is how people view truth and we must be wise in how to persuade people of that truth. Paul also understood the spiritual battle that swirled around him and other believers. He wrote the Galatians, many of whom were leaving facts for feelings and fear, "You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you." It's good to remember that the enemy is also quite adept at persuasion. Thank you for this excellent article!
