I might add that Jefferson may have considered Natives unable to comprehend the spiritual significance of an Almighty God. I have read, that because he, Jefferson, was an extrovert who could speak French, was the one who wined, dined and entertained wealthy French patrons, in order to solicit funding for our war for independence. While he was away in France, he lost his wife, then I believe two other family members, in a country known for its unspirituality, while known for pride and humanism as its' history and present time as well. Given no spiritual support, he "fell off the wagon" in faith, thus, had a change of heart. Later, he may have changed back. I am simply adding pieces I have picked up elsewhere.
